Obituary

John Gordon Christian III met his Savior face to face on September 15, 2023, after a courageous yearlong battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. Born on April 2, 1938, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Gordon was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Gordon grew up in the Myers Park area of Charlotte and maintained lifelong relationships with his neighbors and classmates. He had a genuine love for people and was often described as "everybody's friend." He loved all kinds of sports and was fiercely competitive especially on the racquetball court, where he took delight in defeating opponents half his age - and even they became friends. Gordon also enjoyed gardening and watching things grow.

Gordon's life was transformed on October 4, 1977, when by faith he received Jesus Christ as his Savior while reading Billy Graham's book, How to be Born Again. From that day forward, he dedicated his life to sharing the good news of the Gospel with others. He had discovered that, as Pastor Tim Keller said, "The gospel is this: We are more sinful and flawed in ourselves than we ever dared believe, yet at the very same time we are more loved and accepted in Jesus Christ than we ever dared hope."

In 1981, Gordon and his wife Leslie answered God's call to full-time Christian service, joining Wycliffe Bible Translators. For nearly thirty years, they supported Wycliffe's mission to give God's Word to every person in their mother tongue. Gordon and Leslie served in Indonesia and the Philippines, the larger Asia area, Latin America, and the United States. After retirement, Gordon led Bible studies with prison and jail inmates wherever he and Leslie lived.

Gordon will be deeply missed by his wife Leslie, sons Jack, David, Blake, and Jeffrey, as well as his grandchildren Grant, Anna, Scott, Tuesday, Yulina, and Christian. His life touched countless individuals, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.

May his memory be a source of comfort and inspiration to those who mourn his loss and yet know that he is safely home in heaven.
