Obituary

George Jonathan Washington Jr., a brilliant computer programmer, systems analyst, and deeply devoted family man, passed away peacefully at home in bed on August 10, 2026, in Amite City, Louisiana, at the age of 82.

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 11, 1944, to George J. Washington Sr. and Ruby Mae Washington, George’s life was defined by intelligence, grit, and an unwavering commitment to his loved ones. He grew up as the eldest of six brothers and excelled academically, graduating as the Valedictorian of McDonogh 35 High School. Following his honorable military service, he attended Xavier University, where he again graduated at the top of his class.

As a pioneer in the technology sector, George became a highly regarded computer programmer and systems analyst. His foundational work spanned key industries, where he designed everything from the programming infrastructure for municipal traffic lights to the real-time update systems that power modern bank ATMs. Driven by a desire to provide the best possible life for his family, he bravely traveled the country alone to secure top-tier professional opportunities. Through his hard work, he proudly moved his family from the ghetto of New Orleans into a custom-built home in an upper-middle-class subdivision in Dallas, Texas, during the 1970s. He often shared his life philosophy with his children: "You can do anything you want, just be prepared to suffer the consequences.".

At home, George was an avid sports enthusiast who particularly loved watching the WNBA, alongside football, golf, and basketball. He spent his downtime at his house watching old cartoons, westerns, and mysteries.

At the heart of George’s life was an enduring, 67-year relationship with his true love, Gwendolyn Gwyn, whom he met when they were just 14 years old. They married and had 4 children. Though they later divorced, they remained the closest of friends throughout his entire life, and she survives him in deep grief.

George is survived by his children (Gwynita Walker, Gwynette Washington, and Emmett Washington), grandchildren (Jasmyne, Michael, Hypatia, Charles, & Emmanuel), brothers (Alfred and Philip), Sister-in-law (Sharon Washington), close family friend (Carlos Jefferson), and daughter-in-law (Tomika Hill). He is reunited in death with his parents, child (GlenEverett), brothers (Jackie, Robin, and Erol), and grandson (Everett).
