Gayland enjoyed both salt water and river fishing, hunting with his grandsons. He loved the Chicago Cubs and the Bears. He also enjoyed gardening massive tomatoes and hot peppers (for his 5 alarm chili). But most of all, he loved spending time with his four beautiful grandchildren.
Gayland made the best chili. Having won many chili cook-offs, it was always requested by his family. Every time we'd visit his parent's house, he'd make a huge pot for everyone. It was his specialty!
Spending time fishing and with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Gayland grew up in South Omaha where he attended South High School. After High school joined the Navy in 1964 and was sent to bootcamp in San Diego, California. Gayland served in Vietnam aboard the U.S.S. VANCE DER 387 an Edsel class Destroyer escort.
He served from 1965 to 1968. After he left the Navy, he met and married Diana Helen Dreier in 1971. They had two children Erin in 1974 and Matthew in 1975. He enlisted Navy Reserves in 1972 until 1983 when he once again re-enlisted active duty for the Navy Seabees.
In 1984, he brought his wife, Diana and their two children, Erin and Matthew to their first duty station, NCBC in Gulfport, Mississippi where he served as Chief Petty Officer.. He enjoyed several deployments to Okinawa, Japan (twice) Rota, Spain and Panama. In 1989 he received orders to remain stateside to Glenview NAS in Glenview, Illinois. After 3 years at Glenview Naval Air Station, he and his wife decided to move his family to Ackley, Iowa where they purchased a small homestead and in 1993, Gayland retired from his 28 years of combined Military service.
He was a true American Patriot and truly loved serving his country. 🇺🇸
Many years later, he and Diana would attend the U.S.S. Vance reunions to see his old shipmates Jerry Blum (Joanne), Jim Ensy and his wife, Jim Ensey and wife Tsui, Bob Howey and wife Diana, Duane Downs and wife Chris, and Jim McCutcheon. Those days of reuniting with his old Navy buddies brought him so much joy.
Gayland preceeds his wife Diana, His Parents Roy and Virginia Wise of Plattsmouth, Nebraska, sisters Victoria Valenti (Plattsmouth) and Lolly Boyles of Sun City, Arizona. He leaves behind his eldest daughter Erin Wise and her two daughters Lauren and Paige Sents, son Matthew and his wife Barbi and their two sons Connor and Spencer. His brother Dale Wise of LaPlatte, Nebraska and many nephews and nieces and close friends.
Those that knew Gayland in life, would know he was a very kind hearted generous soul who would give his last dollar to someone needing it more than he. He passionately loved his family, his country and the NAVY. FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS, WE WILL MISS YOU. SEE YOU SOON BABY HUEY. ♥
