Obituary

Gary Lee Monk, born on March 15, 1952, in Bangor, ME, passed away on November 10, 2024, in Newcastle, NE.

A man of many passions, Gary was known for his love of fixing up British sports cars, the Midwest Arm wrestling Association and spending time at his cherished river spot, which he considered his favorite place in the world.

Throughout his life, Gary wore many hats. He became well-known for running arm wrestling tournaments and his superb culinary skills. From 1994 to 2002, he was Owner and head cook of The Village Cafe in Newcastle, NE, followed by his Ownership of Market St. Cafe in Vermillion, SD, from 2002 to 2014.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Monk and Norma Davenport, his former wife Marsha Eanes (Mother of son and daughter), and his wife Karen Fieldier.

He is survived by his son, John Jonas Monk, and his two children, Elanna and Olivia Monk. He also leaves behind his daughter, Jenniffer Davis, and her two children, Sarah Bibin and Holly Davis, as well as two great-grandchildren, Daisy and Teddy Bibin. Gary is also survived by his siblings, Mike Monk, Deb Vandiemen, and Jim Monk.


If anybody could find reasons for celebrations, it was Gary. He also loved the Huskers. And watching Gunsmoke, Gary will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, love of life, and the joy he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed by family, friends, and the community he served.
