Gary Kenneth Gunter, born on November 20, 1946, in Jay, Florida, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025, in Appling, Georgia. He was a loving father, grandfather, and a dedicated member of his community who cherished his family and country above all.
Gary proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, a commitment he carried with him throughout his life. He was actively involved in multiple veteran organizations, including AMVETS, VFW, and the Fleet Reserve, where he formed lasting friendships and shared stories over a beer. His sense of humor and infectious laughter brightened the lives of those around him.
In his younger years, Gary enjoyed activities such as hunting, fishing, and boating, and he loved motorcycle poker runs. He was a fan of Florida State University and had a particular fondness for old westerns starring John Wayne. Among his favorite foods were Tasty T's strawberry milkshakes, shrimp, and crawfish boils.
Gary is survived by his son, Gary K. Gunter II, and his wife, Renee Gunter. He leaves behind his cherished grandchildren: Briana Hayes and Joe Gregory along with their three sons, Braydyn, Braxton, and Nolan; Hope and Michael Broome with their three daughters, Molly, Mia, and Winnie; and Hanna and Matthew Morris.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Smythe and Jesse Gunter, as well as his siblings Bobby Rae Gunter, Leeander Gunter, and Wynell Messick.
A Christian at heart, Gary's spirit remains alive in the hearts of his loved ones. As he often said, "No time to cry, don't shed a tear. I am with God. In spirit, I am here. I kept the faith, My spirit is light. I am at peace now. I fought the good fight." He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
We'll plant real trees for you in Gary's memory and display your contribution forever.
