Gabriel Hernandez Retana

Gabriel H. Retana Passed in peace on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at the age of 89 surrounded with his children and family members. He was a resident of Soledad, California for many years.

Gabriel was born on December 22, 1933 to Carmen Hernandez and Macario Retana in El Paso Texas. The family moved to California where he attended the local schools. Gabriel was a proud Spartan. He played football and basketball, and he enjoyed attending sports events for his children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

After graduating from Gonzales High, he married his sweetheart Angelina Cordova. Together they welcomed their five children. He worked in agriculture driving a broccoli harvester and he also hauled produce to the agriculture coolers. Gabriel was preceded in death by his parents Carmen Hernandez, Macario Retana and his wife Angelina. He is survived by his children Gabriel C. Retana, Vivian Kathryn Hernandez, Frances Escobedo, Mary Louise Retana, Patricia Marie "Tuchy" Carrillo, Daisy Retana Garcia, and Gabriel M. Retana.

Rosary and mass were held on August 29, 2023 in Soledad at Our Lady of Solitude Catholic church. To honor the wishes of Gabriel and Angelina, their children will lay them to rest together at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Prunedale, California, 93907 on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at 11:00 am.
