She loved singing, dancing and cooking
She loved different traditional african foods and also enjoyed foreign cuisine.
She loved gospel music. Anyone can attest to that. But what many didn’t know was that back in the day, Elvis Presley, Elton John and James Brown were her favourite artists.
Her care and love for people was amazing. She trusted most people and gave her time to be there for people. I think most if not everyone who knew her would agree.
Her children, they were her world. She made sure they knew and were comforted by it.
She didn’t get to visit her favourite place on earth but she’s in her favourite place right now.
She wasn’t a fan of television but she would spend time watching family movies with her children.
She wasn’t sporty but there was a time she raced her son down the road and proved that she was a good good runner.
Ethel Fukama Chongo Phillips, lovingly known as Ma Ndlovu, passed away on April 19, 2024, at the age of 63. She was born on August 6, 1960.
Ethel had a zest for life and cherished moments of singing, dancing, and cooking. Her cravings for traditional foods led her to enjoy different African dishes.
Gospel music was Ethel's passion, although few knew that Elvis Presley, Elton John and James Brown were her favorite artists in her younger days. Her care and love for others was remarkable, as she generously dedicated her time and support to those in need.
Above all, Ethel treasured her children and considered them the center of her world. Though she never got to visit her favorite place on earth, she now rests in her cherished place as we speak.
Television did not interest Ethel, but she found joy in watching family movies with her loved ones. While not particularly sporty, she once surprised everyone with her impressive running skills when she raced her son down the road.
Professionally, Ethel studied at the University of Zambia, university of Pretoria and Wits. She was a qualified clinical psychologist and an international Red Cross volunteer. She also contributed to occupational health and safety, and she proudly mentioned her involvement in the National Service, the Botswana Council of Women, and as an advisor to Lady Ruth Kgama.
Ethel's favorite quotes and life mottos reflected her deep faith: "God knows", "God bless you", "May the face of the Lord God shine upon you", and "Trust God." Her proudest accomplishments were undoubtedly her children, whom she loved unconditionally.
Ethel is survived by her 3 children, Emmanuel Jabulani, Rachael Siphiwe and Natalie Sibongile, 2 grandchildren Bokang and Michael. She is also mourned by her siblings, Obert and Klaus Chongo to mention a few who were able to be present during this time.
Ethel's exceptional kindness, compassion, and respect touched the lives of many. Her ability to connect with people on a deep level was both mysterious and beautiful. She made everyone she encountered feel loved and appreciated, leaving a lasting impact on their lives.
She actively contributed and was part of various international organizations and social causes, including the International Organization for Migration (IOM), International Labour Office - Geneva & Pretoria and The Potter's House. Ethel served in the Department of Health MEC Health Clinic Committee as a Chairperson at the Skinner Clinic.
Although Ethel was born into a Seventh-day Adventist family, her calling as a Chaplain led her to study various religions, enabling her to connect spiritually with others. She held a special fondness for the Jewish faith.
Ethel Fukama Chongo Phillips leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and kindness. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
