Dorothy Mae Spruill became a Cosmotologist after attending I.C. Norome High School in Portsmouth, VA. She later became a Cosmology Instructor at Portsmouth Beauty School. . Graduating class of 1956. Dorothy worked at three manufactoring companies, Star Band, General Electric Portsmouth, Va and Erricson, Lynchburg, Virginia.

Dorothy Mae Spruill, born on May 4, 1938, in Williamston, NC, peacefully passed away on August 23, 2024, in Baltimore County, MD. A proud graduate of I.C. Norcom High School’s class of 1956, Dorothy pursued a career in cosmetology, earning her degree from Portsmouth Beauty Academy. She later became a dedicated cosmetology instructor at Portsmouth Beauty School, sharing her passion and expertise with aspiring beauticians.
Dorothy was a vibrant woman who embodied unconditional love, cherished by her family and friends. She was just as comfortable at home, enjoying her favorite hobbies of word puzzles and sipping coffee, as she was being the life of the party. Her love for music was evident in her fondness for old school rhythm and blues, with artists like Alicia Keys and Prince holding special places in her heart. Dorothy’s favorite place in the world was her home, where she loved to sit on the front porch soaking up the sun for hours, which gave her that beautiful golden tone.
She was a devoted mother to Teresa Spires and her son-in-law, Michael Spires, and took immense pride in her children and grandchildren: Nathaniel, Emaniel, Terrika, Michael A., Joshua, Tamia, Tykiah, and Alijah Spires. Additionally, she was a loving great-grandmother to TeKira, TeyAri, Ramone, Keoni, Terron, Deshaun, Jackson, and Kehlani. And, a host of Nieces and Nephews.
Dorothy had a zest for life that extended to her love of watching sports and her favorite TV shows, including crime stories and old westerns. Throughout her life, she also enjoyed hearty meals of fried chicken and chicken and dumplings, which were always favorites at family gatherings.
She is remembered not only for her warmth and laughter but also for her beloved black lab, Cocoa, who was her loyal companion. Dorothy Mae Spruill will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her legacy of love and joy will continue to shine through her family and friends.
