Dontray Dearice Lamule McElrath, affectionately known as Big D or Big Country, was born on July 18, 1990, in Rutherfordton, NC, and passed away on September 12, 2024, in Rutherfordton, NC. He fathered two beautiful children, Damien Michael William McElrath, age 7, and Camilia Mae Ellen McElrath, age 6, and was a loving fiancé to Jessica Chapman, who shared many cherished moments with him.
Dontray was the beloved son of Clinton Wayne McElrath of Morganton, NC, and Kathleen Long McElrath of Union Mills, NC. He is also survived by his brother, Ivan McElrath of Swannanoa, NC; his sister, Chelsey Hodge of Valdese, NC; and his nephew, Jonas Hodge of Valdese, NC. Proceeded in rest by his mother's parents Dearice and Donnie Mae Long. Dontray was deeply loved by his grandparents, James and Lorene McElrath of Morganton, NC, as well as a multitude of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
A CDL truck driver by profession, Dontray was known for his generosity and caring nature, always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. He had a special connection to his community, often seen riding his lawnmower while holding a weed eater, determined to assist anyone who required it. His warmth and humor shone through in every interaction, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of others.
Dontray loved to spend his free time hunting and fishing, indulging in woodworking and painting, and enjoying the simplicity of life at the river. He had a passion for food, enjoying every dish that didn't include coconuts or mushrooms. Music was another significant part of his life, with Shaky Graves being one of his favorite artists. At a young age, he took piano lessons and would often sing when no one was around.
Dontray's character was defined by his caring, generous, and humorous personality. He gave the best bear hugs, often squeezing tighter until laughter filled the air. He was known for his laid-back nature, yet he stood firm in his beliefs and values, seeing older men as role models and always striving to make others smile.
Growing up, Dontray attended Union Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, where he was nurtured in his faith. He will be remembered for his beautiful spirit, his laughter, and the love he shared with his family and friends. His legacy of kindness and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
