Obituary

Deborah Jean Shannon was born on January 16th, 1955, in Beckly, West Virginia where she would spend her childhood, graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1973. She attended Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia before transferring to Concord College where she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in Education and was a proud Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA), upholding their mission of cultivating high scholastic and ethical standards amongst all the young women that she would encounter and mentor throughout her life. Deborah developed a passion for teaching stemming from childhood. She taught education in Raleigh County for over seventeen years and served as a social worker during a short break that she took from teaching.

After Deborah retired, she became a devoted military grandma and mother. She always said that changed her life for the better and it truly showed. Her grandchildren felt the love and support only a grandmother could provide. Deb took a special joy in spending quality time with and teaching her grandchildren anything from artwork, childhood songs, games, and the word of God. Moving in with her daughter allowed Deborah to have more time to devote herself to Christ. Soon, Debbie became a lifelong educator in teaching the word of God through numerous bible studies that she led. Diving deeper into her Christianity, she became the Prayer Coordinator for The Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC) in Fort Irwin, CA and at Fellowship of the Rockies in Fountain, CO. Other activities that Deb dedicated her time to were volunteering at the Life Network Pregnancy Center in Fountain Valley, CO and at the Bear Creek Nature Center in Colorado Springs, CO. Most of her hobbies were tied to the various fields that she worked in. She would crochet baby blankets for the Pregnancy Center, shop for others as she shopped for herself, and she would educate others on things that she was educating herself on with the materials she was reading.

Deb was devoted to her causes and to the many people around her. Everyone that knew her well also knew that she was the life of the party and enjoyed entertaining others with her infectious smile and laughter. She knew how to turn difficult and stressful times into positive and enjoyable experiences. She spoke words of wisdom and truth, and she challenged others to what was righteous and what was reality. Sugarcoating was not of her essence. Deb had the beautiful gift of being able to see the good in people no matter how badly they had treated her, or others and she would make it a point to nurture, uplift, and point out the good aspects that she saw in them. She enjoyed traveling with friends and her family, watching sky views both day and night, and she loved to watch a good mystery or real crime TV.

Deborah J (Finny) Shannon-Webb sunset her life here on earth on 27 August 2024.

She is survived by her daughter Deborah Michelle, son-in-law Philp Gardner, 3 grandchildren Aiyanna, Philip, and Chris, brother Robert Hughes and wife Belinda, nephew Philip Shannon, niece Lisa Shannon and many other family members. She is preceded in death by her son Chris, mother Pearl Shannon, sister Mary Ellen, and brother Cecil. She leaves to cherish her memory a host of friends, family, and many others who have encountered her along their path.
