Deborah Anne Briggs, a strong mighty woman of God, passed away on March 25, 2024, in her hometown of Boston, MA. She was born on June 1, 1959, to the late Ernestine Whitfield Carrol and Willie Smith.
Deborah was a graceful and God-fearing woman, known for her lively conversations and socially stylish personality. She had a commanding presence and always dressed to impress, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met. Deborah's love for music was evident in her favorite Gospel songs, which she played relentlessly, including "Nobody but Jesus" by Vanessa Bell Armstrong and "Storms" by Donell Malloy, as well as enjoying records from Sly and the Family Stone and Earth Wind and Fire.
Deborah made a significant impact on the lives of others through her various endeavors. She was dedicated to workforce development through her years working with the Commonwealth and later Department of Revenue. Throughout her professional career, she mentored both young men and women, and providing fatherhood workshops. She also had a heart for helping people and guiding them in their personal and professional journeys. Her faith played a central role in her life, and she was a devoted advocate of the Love of Jesus.
She actively participated in community organizations and social causes, spreading the message of Christ's love. She began her Christian journey at Morning Star Baptist Church and grew spiritually through her various life adversities and experiences. Throughout her lifetime, she facilitated many spiritual retreats, workshops and events. Some monumental ones were: "Kingdom Heiress" a Faith based mentoring program for young High School women. The 'Beyond Shame' workshop and the "Open up Your Mouth" workshop. Deborah initiated the Exchange platform, a community of women who shared scriptures and real-life stories through the lens of Christ. She spoke at women's groups, including being the featured speaker at the Bethel AME Prayer Breakfast, inspiring others with her words. In 2023, she took part in the MGH Cancer Equity Colloquium fashion show, where she shared her beauty on the runway in addition to her experiences as an advocate for Triple Negative Breast Cancer.
During her own battle with cancer, Deborah became a client, advocate, and speaker for the Ellie Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving families living with breast cancer. She believed greatly in their mission of supporting patients, funding care, and providing hope to those affected by the disease.
Deborah was actively involved in her church community, serving as a Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, and First Lady at Southern Baptist Church. She also led Bible studies, mentored others, and spoke at various workshops. Her love for handwritten notes, letters, and cards showcased her desire for tangible connections with others. Her gift of calligraphy and speaking to others
Deborah is survived by her loving children, Lindsey and Jillian Briggs, from her former union with Joseph Briggs. She cherished her role as a grandmother to Avery Evans. She was also a beloved sister to Barbara Hicks and Susan Carrol, and was predeceased by her brother Tony Carrol. Deborah leaves a host of close nieces and nephews, co-workers, work daughters, mentees, family and friends to mourn her loss.
Deborah's favorite Scripture, Psalm 27:13-14, guides us in remembering her faith and strength: "I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord."
Deborah Anne Briggs will be remembered as a woman of strong faith, unwavering love, and a passion for helping others. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her, and her vibrancy will be greatly missed.
