Under a pen name, Debbie wrote a bestselling mystery novel series about a detective who communicates with animals to solve crimes.
Debbie loved nothing more than to chase the horizon, where the sky met the sea in an endless dance of color. Whether she was sailing solo across uncharted waters or hiking through misty mountain trails at dawn, Debbie thrived on the feeling of discovery. Every new place she explored was a story waiting to be told, every person she met a piece of a puzzle she was determined to solve. Adventure wasn’t just a hobby for Debbie Willbine—it was the very air she breathed. But beyond her bold journeys, Debbie loved nothing more than to return home, barefoot in her cozy sunlit kitchen, brewing herbal teas she collected from distant lands, and sharing tales of wonder with anyone willing to listen.
Debbie Willbine’s favorite place in the world was a hidden cove on the coast of New Zealand, known only to a few locals as Whispering Bay. Tucked between towering cliffs and lush fern-covered hills, the secluded beach could only be reached by a narrow, winding path that disappeared at high tide. What made Whispering Bay so special to Debbie wasn’t just its breathtaking beauty—the way the waves carved delicate patterns into the black sand or how the sea breeze carried the scent of wild jasmine—but the way the wind seemed to hum softly through the rocks, as if the Earth itself were sharing its secrets. Debbie often said it was the only place where time stood still. She would spend hours there sketching, writing in her weathered leather journal, or simply lying on the warm stones, watching the sky change colors. It was her sanctuary, a quiet corner of the world where she felt truly connected to nature and herself.
Despite all her adventures, one of the most meaningful facts about Debbie Willbine is that she secretly funded the preservation of Whispering Bay to protect it from commercial development. When she discovered that developers planned to turn the untouched cove into a luxury resort, Debbie quietly purchased the surrounding land through a conservation trust she created. She named it The Horizon Foundation, dedicated to protecting fragile ecosystems and preserving natural sanctuaries around the world. To Debbie, saving Whispering Bay wasn’t just about protecting a beautiful place—it was about safeguarding a space where future dreamers, explorers, and quiet souls could find peace, just as she had. Few knew that Debbie was behind the effort, but for her, the act of preserving nature’s stories was far more important than recognition.
Obituary for Debbie Willbine
1952 – 2024
Deborah “Debbie” Willbine, beloved adventurer, environmentalist, and quiet guardian of the world’s hidden wonders, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2024, at the age of 71.
Born in Wellington, New Zealand, Debbie spent her life chasing horizons and uncovering the world’s quiet magic. From her early days as an underwater archaeologist discovering lost relics off distant shores to her later years as an advocate for environmental preservation, Debbie lived with unmatched curiosity and compassion.
Among her many achievements, Debbie was the founder of The Horizon Foundation, a global conservation trust dedicated to protecting fragile ecosystems from commercial exploitation. Through this foundation, Debbie quietly preserved countless natural sanctuaries, including her most cherished place, Whispering Bay, a secluded cove on New Zealand’s coast. She believed in safeguarding spaces where people could reconnect with nature and themselves.
Debbie was also a world record holder for creating the largest origami sculpture, an author of a bestselling mystery series under a pen name, and a pioneer in sustainable design. Yet, it was never the accolades that mattered to her. Those close to Debbie knew her as a woman who listened more than she spoke, who found joy in the smallest details—a seashell, a breeze, a story half-told.
She is survived by her sister, Marianne Willbine, her two nephews , and countless friends and admirers around the world who were touched by her
