Daniel Harold McLean, known affectionately as "Dan the Man," or “ElkMan”, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2024, at the age of 77 in Dawson Creek BC. Born on December 14, 1946, in Regina Sk, to parents, Gordon and Dorothy McLean. As a young child his parents moved the family to Victoria BC where Dan attended school and later met his Bride, Penny Potts. They married September 9th, 1967 and within a few years had their 3 children. Dan and Penny moved their family to the Dawson Creek area in the late 70’s. Dan spent his later years in the Farmington, BC, area where he was a beloved member of the community.
Dan was a logger on the island before he became a plumber and then later a pipefitter, he was a dedicated employee, known for his punctuality and strong work ethic. He had an entrepreneurial spirit, having been involved in several business ventures, including Sage Mechanical ( his own plumbing and construction company on the Island), Castaway boats Taxidermy and farming.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dan was cherished for his honesty, his humor and his willingness to help others, Always ready to give the shirt off his back to a stranger.
In his personal life, Dan found immense joy in his family and friends. His passion was hunting, and absolutely enjoyed the thrill of it, whether riverboat hunting, hunting near the deer camp or elk camp cabins that he and his friends built and the comraderie of hunting with his buddies and taking his Son Shawn on trips to teach him the hunting ways.
Dan lit up when surrounded by his children, (of whom he was very proud of), grand children and great-grandchildren, always ready with a tease or a joke.
Dan was attacked by a grizzly bear during one of his hunting trips as evidenced by the large scar on his shoulder…. This was the story he told to all his grandkids, neices, and nephews who all listened intently and were in awe of how their grandfather/uncle tackled back and won the fight with the bear. Of course the scar really came from surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder due to a macho man fist fight. Theses were the kinds of fun he would have with everyone.
Dan enjoyed watching sports, hockey, golf, baseball, and playing bocce ball games with son in law Joe, always with a competitive edge.
Daniel is survived by his doting wife, Penny with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. Penny was Dan’s greatest cheerleader over the years, and in the last 2 years of Dan’s poor health she was right beside him every step of the way. He was so very thankful for her! He leaves behind three children: Shawn (Taryn), Victoria (Terry), and Angela (Joe), along with his cherished grandchildren: Alexandra (Braden), Nicholas (Morgan), Mariah (Gage), Jazmin (Jordan), Lizzie, Dj, Sonja, Tatum,Corbin, Tyler, and Nathan.
His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Kohen, Rhett, Eberly, Desmond, Lena, Emily, Mya, and Ava.
Daniel was preceased by his parents, Dorothy and Gordon McLean, and his siblings Toody, Heather, and Donny, while he is survived by his sister Margie, and many nieces and nephews.
Dan will be remembered for his fun loving spirit, his love of family and friends and the joy he brought to everyone around him.
His wish to visit Australia remained unfulfilled, but his adventurous heart will live on in the stories shared by those who loved him.
