Spending time with her Grandchildren, Gardening, reading her scriptures, and attending local church events. Our Nana loved to write letters to all her friends and family. Anyone that knew Chris would come to expect one of her beautifully written letters in cursive. She had the best stationary sets.
She loved eating at Cracker Barrel every chance she could. She loved her extra hot coffee and her breakfast there. She also enjoyed Mexican food. She loved going out with her Grand daughter Candice who would take her out to various restaurants and spend quality time together.
She loved to listen to her hymnals and Christian music. Christa and her husband once recorded an album in their early years. This would trickle down for generations to come in the family. We are all just musically inclined.
Born to Joseph Franklin Heidelberg and Lillian Marie Bell Heidelberg from Midland, Texas. Christa Bell Heidelberg Kitterman was the oldest, then Helen Joy Heidelberg Weber, then their baby brother Dave Franklin Heidelberg the youngest who was fourteen years younger than his sisters.
Her Grandchildren were her entire world! Family meant everything to her and she was the reason we have so many captured memories through all the pictures she took over the years. She also spent her life donating to various charities and taking care of others by monthly donations. It was her life's mission to give to those in need.
Gene and Chris had two daughters who have since passed. Tina Kitterman Harris (passed away in 2007) who married Rodney Harris and Melody Thomas (Passed away in 2025) who married Chris Thomas. Both of which she loved with all her heart. Grand children: Avalon "Chad" Rose Harris, Amanda Harris-Sammons, Candice Rocha, Holly Harris, Aaron Thomas, and Brandon Thomas Great Grandchildren: Jacob Harris, Joshua Harris, Mackenzie Harris, Geneva Burch, Amber Thomas, Ryan Thomas, Riley Thomas, and Haven Thomas.
Christa Bell Heidelberg was born in 1934 in Midland, Texas, as the eldest of three children to Joseph and Lillian Heidelberg. She was followed by her sister Helen Joy Heidelberg Weber and her younger brother Dave Heidelberg. As the oldest, Chris embraced the responsibilities of farm life with dedication, taking the lead on chores and looking after the safety and well-being of the family and the farm. On the farm, she would bravely catch and kill rattlesnakes to keep the farm safe, particularly around the front door of their home. Each day after school, she would also make sure their cherished cow was safely returned home when it wandered off, demonstrating her sense of responsibility and care for the animals. Chris shared a special bond with her Aunt Audrey, who was close in age to her. They were like sisters, and many photographs capture Chris, Helen, and Audrey playing together on the farm. Despite the years and life’s changes, both Helen, now living in Houston, Texas, and Audrey in Washington maintained a close relationship with Chris until her passing. Chris’s younger brother, Dave, passed away from cancer in 1984 but her memory and the love she shared with her family remain cherished to this day.
Chris earned her degrees from Wayland Baptist University, where she met the love of her life, her late husband, Gene Kitterman (who passed away in 2013). She later continued her education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Chris dedicated many decades to teaching at South Grand Prairie High School in Grand Prairie, where she taught a variety of other subjects throughout her career. She was a deeply influential figure in her community and played a key role in bringing the Bible back into the school system. Passionate about her faith and her students, Chris founded the Agape Christian Club, giving students a space to express and explore their beliefs both during and after school. Her impact endured long after her retirement, and her legacy lives on as the club continues today, now merged with another prominent Christian organization on campus.
In Loving Memory of Christa Bell Heidelberg Kitterman
1934 – 2026
Christa Bell Heidelberg Kitterman, lovingly known as “Chris” and “Nana” to her family, was born in 1934 in Midland, Texas, to Lillian Marie Bell Heidelberg and Joseph Franklin Heidelberg. Raised on a farm as the oldest of three siblings, Christa developed a deep sense of responsibility, faith, and devotion to family that would define the rest of her life.
She is survived by her younger sister, Helen Joy Heidelberg Weber; her grandchildren, Avalon “Chad” Rose Harris, Amanda Harris Sammons, Candice Rocha, and Holly Harris; and her eight great-grandchildren: Jacob Harris, Joshua Harris, Mackenzie Harris, Geneva Burch, Amber Thomas, Ryan Thomas, Riley Thomas, and Haven Thomas.
Christa was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gene Kitterman, who passed away in 2013; her youngest daughter, Tina Kitterman Harris, in 2007; and her firstborn daughter, Melody Thomas, in December 2025.
Christa lived a long and beautiful life marked by service, sacrifice, and unwavering love for those around her. In her early years, after her mother suffered a terrible bicycle accident and became bedridden, Christa left church ministry to become a teacher so she could help support her family. She faithfully sent every penny of her salary home to her father to pay for the nurses caring for her mother. That was the kind of woman Christa was — selfless, devoted, and steadfast in her love for family.
Christa was known for her radiant smile, one that could brighten any room regardless of the circumstances. She cared deeply for her family and became a refuge for her grandchildren throughout their lives, always offering warmth, comfort, prayer, and safety during difficult seasons.
No family celebration ever felt complete without a cake from Cooper Street Bakery, a tradition Christa lovingly made part of every gathering. Her home was filled with joy and laughter, especially for her grandchildren, who spent countless hours in the playroom she created just for them — stocked with toys, fun gadgets, and endless coloring books.
Chris impacted countless lives throughout her lifetime, especially those of her grandchildren. During sensitive and difficult seasons in her granddaughters’ lives, she lovingly welcomed them into her home, comforting them with prayer and reading Bible scriptures beside them. She often reminded them that “all things work together for those who love the Lord,” encouraging them to hold onto faith through every circumstance. She imparted wisdom, compassion, and enduring lessons they will carry with them forever.
Family gatherings at Nana’s house were always special. Chris loved making coffee for everyone, and her beautiful cookware and silverware were always displayed elegantly around the dinner table. She had a unique way of turning ordinary moments into treasured memories. Her freezer was always stocked with Blue Bell ice cream, and there was always V8 and orange juice waiting in the refrigerator.
Chris Kitterman devoted decades of her life to teaching at South Grand Prairie High School, where she faithfully invested in the lives of her students both inside and outside the classroom. During her years there, she helped establish the Agape Christian Club, creating a place where students could gather in faith, encouragement, and fellowship. Passionate about helping young people grow spiritually, Chris tirelessly advocated before the school board to have Bible courses approved as dual-credit classes. She believed students should have opportunities to strengthen their faith while pursuing their education, and she worked diligently to make that vision a reality.
Through her compassion, perseverance, and unwavering faith, Chris leaves behind a remarkable legacy that will continue for generations to come. Countless students, friends, and family members have already been impacted by the seeds she planted throughout her life, and many more will continue to be influenced by her example of love, faith, generosity, and service.
She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
We'll plant real trees for you in Christa "Chris"'s memory and display your contribution forever.
