Obituary

Carmel James Sanchez, better known as CJ, and affectionately known as Tigre in his youth by his family and friends was born on April 14, 1965, in Mountainair, New Mexico. He grew up in a military family, relocating often and had the opportunity to live in places like North Carolina and Germany.

At 18, CJ enlisted in the United States Air Force. His distinguished career serving our country in the United States Air Force is deeply appreciated, respected, and does not go unnoticed. During his military service with the USAF he served as a crew chief, and moved his way up into becoming a Sargent and built many skills working on the latest aircrafts.

He eventually decided to transfer the skills he gained from the service into the civilian sector and headed toward greener pastures in California, at United Airlines, following his honorable discharge.

Inevitably, he found his soul mate out west & they created their family and home in the Bay Area.

He utilized his mechanical aptitude as an airplane mechanic working with United Airlines where he stayed for many years. Always hungry for more, he started multiple businesses and ultimately landed an incredible career leading a dedicated team within the boiler shop at the Chevron refinery for almost 15 years, until his retirement on July 26th, 2023, exactly one year to the day before his sudden passing.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Carmel and Mary Sanchez, as well as his sister, Cheryl Autrey, his father and mother-in-law, Peter and Vivian De Souza, and brother-in-law, Noel De Souza.

CJ is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Cheryl De Souza-Sanchez. Their nearly 3 decade long marriage was a testament to love, commitment, and perseverance. Their love story was one for the books and their love for each other continues on until they meet again.

CJ was also a loving and devoted father. His legacy is continued by his three children, Dylan, Ryan and Alyssa.  His children were a source of immense pride and joy for him. He loved them and they love him.

CJ is survived by his sister, Maxine (Luis) Hernandez, Gene Autrey (brother-in-law), Sean De Souza (brother-in-law).

Nephews: Eric (Amanda) Hernandez, Michael Hernandez, Demitri Autrey, and Zachary De Souza.

Nieces: Celia Hernandez, Jasmine (Amlesh) Muni.

He was also a Great Uncle to Cooper and Ayla Hernandez. And soon to be Alina Muni.

A man of faith, CJ was a devout Roman Catholic. His spirituality played an instrumental role in his life and guided him through both joyous and challenging times.

CJ’s warmth, his beautiful smile, caring nature, and unwavering dedication will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him. He worked tirelessly his entire life, making sure his family was always taken care of. He did everything he could do to make sure they had everything they needed and wanted. In spite of the many challenges he faced on a daily basis, he never once complained. He carried his crosses in the best ways he could figure out and selflessly put his family first in countless ways. His memory will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and colleagues. He is deeply missed and will never be forgotten.

Until we meet again, please take care of us from your new home where you can now rest, my cowboy and our pop. We will love you for eternity!

Love always,

Chergirl (Cheryl), Dindon (Dylan), Ryguy (Ryan) and Miss Lyss (Alyssa) 💙🕊️
