Obituary

Burt V. Burchette, born on August 4, 1933, in Audubon, Iowa, left our lives on April 29, 2023, in Lago Vista, Texas. He was a beloved father to Teresa and Bernard and a cherished brother to Ronald, Ray, and Beverly. Burt was the son of Cleo and Olive, and throughout his life, he was a guiding light for his family. His brother, Ray, fondly remembers him as a mentor and idol, crediting Burt with positively shaping his life when he took him in at the age of 19.

Burt was a Marine through and through.  The Marine Corp moto is Semper Fidelis meaning Always Faithful.  It symbolizes dedication and faithfulness to Corp, country and fellow marines. Burt lived his life by that moto.  Steadfast dedication to family, friends, work and personal goals were at the center of his heart. Burt joined the Marine Corp in 1952 during the Korean War where he served one tour of duty. The Vietnam War followed, where Burt served two tours of duty.

Burt received many medals and commendations, the most significant being the Bronze Star with Valor for combat duty.  When life moved at a slower pace, Burt found himself stationed at Coronado, California, and not only served his country but completed an associate’s degree, a bachelor’s degree, and an MBA while raising two children with his accomplished military wife, Margy. After 27 and a half years, Burt retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel. In the next chapter of his life, Burt was employed by General Dynamics originally in middle management as a program manager and quickly rising to become the program director.

Burt had a playful spirit, always looking for ways to trick those around him. An avid storyteller, Burt enjoyed making video stories that brought everyone together. His love for BBQ was only matched by his passion for football, which he followed with enthusiasm. Burt had a unique way of connecting with the world around him; during vacations, he would often engage with his beloved cats, Mocho and Lokita, through cameras he set up at home, and he took great delight in feeding his deer and fox friends.

With a smile that could light up any room, Burt leaves behind a legacy of joy, love, and cherished memories. His spirit will continue to resonate with all who knew him.
