Interesting facts about Bruce
Bruce loved to bird hunt and found the perfect canine companion in his beloved Candance, his first Brittany Spaniel. Two more Brittany's would come along - Sadie and CarrieDawn. As far as Bruce was concerned, they were the best friends anyone could wish for. Bruce learned to golf at a young age. He played through high school with his cousins Jon and Tom Carey and was coached by his uncle, Don Carey. He continued to golf at Chemeketa Community College and qualified to play at the National Junior College tournaments in Lehigh, Florida in 1974 and again in 1975 at Hutchison, Kansas. Bruce hung up his clubs in the 1980's after he got his first taste of bass fishing in Eastern Oregon.

Bruce's profession(s)
After graduation from Stayton High School in 1970, Bruce began logging for Lauer & Holmes. In 1973 Bruce enrolled at Chemeketa Community College and received his Associates Degree in Forestry. He began his forestry career with the U.S. Forest Service in the Willamette National Forest in 1974 and in 1975 transferred to the Malheur National Forest where he worked for 38 years. Bruce loved the Malheur forest and was proud of his career in the timber department. He retired in 2014.
Bruce's proudest accomplishments
Bruce volunteered at the John Day Community Garden from 2014-2018. He could often be found at the garden weeding, planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops for donation to the local food banks and pantries. In 2014 Bruce began another volunteer endeavor at the Kam Wah Chung State Historic Site as a local volunteer for Oregon State Parks. He volunteered over 3000 hours between 2014 until his death in 2024. In 2022 Bruce was awarded the Standout Heritage Volunteer Award by the Oregon Heritage Commission for his contribution to Kam Wah Chung. Bruce was passionate about educating the public on the important contribution of Chinese residents in the John Day area in the 1860's - 1940's.
