Betty Jewel was born to Vincent and Ella Wee Yates on February 19, 1938. Both parents preceded her in death. She accepted Christ at an early age in Edna, Texas. She attended school in the community of Dry Branch and later moved and completed school in San Antonio, Texas. While living in San Antonio, she united with Tried Stone Baptist Church and remained a member until her death. She was married and had six children; two preceded her in death, Vincent Yates and James Johnson Sr.
