Betty Jean Nelson/Vertelka, beloved mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on May 15, 2024, in Chicago, IL, at the age of 73. She was born on March 24, 1951, in Indianola, Mississippi, and was the daughter of Willie Ed Nelson and Ella Mae Melton].

Betty had a beautiful soul inside and out, and her loving and caring nature touched the lives of many. She had a passion for cooking and feeding the homeless, always ready to help those in need. Betty was known for her generosity, always willing to give the shirt off her back. Her favorite quote, "Put money up for rainy days because you never know what might happen," reflected her practical and thoughtful nature.

In her free time, Betty enjoyed going to thrift stores, hanging out with family and friends, and indulging in soul food. She loved listening to jazz and Dusties, and her favorite pastime was tending to her garden. Betty found joy in watching soap operas and basketball.

Professionally, Betty served as a security officer for over 20 years and later became a Safe Passage worker at Tilton Elementary School. Her dedication to keeping the community safe and supporting the education of children was admirable.

Betty's proudest accomplishment was witnessing the birth of her third generation and becoming a building owner. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and selflessness. Betty will be deeply missed by her children Cynthia Nelson/Selvy, Denard Nelson, Tevaris Nelson, and Williams Nelson, as well as her siblings, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all those who knew and loved her.

A private funeral service will be held to honor and celebrate Betty's life. She will be laid to rest at [Oak Ridge Cemetery ]. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to [charity] in memory of Betty Jean Nelson/Vertelka.

Betty will forever be remembered for her warmth, her unwavering faith, and her ability to make a difference in the lives of others. May she rest in peace.
