Benjamin McCabe Kalei Hipa was born in Honolulu on July 20, 1943 to Samuel Vincent and Agnes McCabe Hipa. The seventh of nine children, Benjamin was raised in a loving home in Honolulu where he attended Cathedral School and Saint Louis High School. He later graduated from Farrington High School. He served in the United States Air Force in Lompoc, CA and later returned to Hawaii in 1968 where he continued to serve his community as a Honolulu Police Officer. He quickly moved up the ranks from a patrol man to investigator of the Criminal Investigation Unit where he retired in 1995. Benjamin's service to others continued well into his retirement years. He earned a reputation for his unwavering commitment to his friends and loved ones. He passed away on December 10, 2022. He was the last survivor of his nine siblings. Ben is survived by his five children. Gina York, Eugene, Oregon. Michael Hipa (Jill) Honolulu, Hawaii, Hekili Hipa (Jennifer) Kailua, Hawaii, Ben Hipa Jr. Chandler, Arizona, Lukila Backstrom(Justin) Long Beach, California, and his 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
His legacy of unconditional love for 'ohana and commitment to a more just world will be missed.
