Barry is survived by his spouse Suzanne, son Shaun (Jennifer), his daughter Jennifer (Dean), and his grandson Korben. As well as his siblings Doris, Lois, Dorothy, Elmer (Tina), Isabel (Gary), Eric, Esther (Colin) as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Barry is predeceased by his parents Ray and Gladys Bruce, and his brothers George and Lorne.
Public display was not the highest value for Barry. Integrity and love was. In a world that’s vulnerable to modifying the rules on how we carry ourselves; Barry stayed true to his values and didn’t conform to any rhythm of expectations. This same principle was bestowed upon those closest to him, especially his children and beloved spouse. One of the greatest gifts that was handed to Shaun and Jennifer was that he believed in every step they took in life and was always there to ensure they were on the right path no matter what the challenges were. Whether it was creating something out of nothing, being there when it mattered most, or just providing a listening ear, he was there.
Duke, you’ve held numerous doors for others while helping loved ones walk across the street of life while providing your jacket against weathering the storm, that it’s only fitting that we provide the same love that you left us with:
Our Duke kept a garden. A garden of the heart;
He planted all the good things, that gave our lives their start.
He turned us to the sunshine, and encouraged us to dream:
Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem.
And when the winds and rain came, he protected us enough;
But not too much because he knew we would stand up strong and tough.
His constant loving example, always taught us right from wrong;
Markers for our pathway that will last a lifetime long.
Then God saw that you were getting tired, a mend was not to be.
So He put His arms around you and whispered, “Come with Me.”
A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.
We are Duke’s garden. We are his legacy.
Thank you Barry “Duke” “Dad”, we love you and forever will.
