Andrew James Wright, known to many as “Andy,” and to those closest to him as “Dad,” “Granddad,” and “Governor Wright,” passed away surrounded by his loving family, leaving behind a legacy that forever shaped Texas and the nation he served. A decorated war veteran, devoted public servant, and transformational leader, Andrew dedicated his life to others. He served as a Member of Congress, Secretary of State of Texas, and Governor of Texas for a historic tenure, later becoming a nominee for President of the United States in 1992. Though his titles were many, he often said his proudest role was being a father and grandfather.

Andrew was married to his beloved wife, Mellisa Jackson Wright, whose strength and partnership guided him through every chapter of his life. He is survived by his children, whom he often addressed with the words, “sons and daughters, I have told you before,” a phrase that reflected his constant guidance and love: Cooper Wright and his wife Jackie; Emily Wright and her husband Brian Jacobs; Paisley Wright-Pena and her husband Lorenzo Pena; and Mathis Wright and his wife Christina. He was a proud grandfather to his many grandchildren, whose lives brought him immeasurable joy. His granddaughters include Sammy, Lilly, Maggie, Maddison, Grae, Hope, Barbara, Jenna, Ericka, Valeria, Mary Claire, Christina, Nicole, Jorydon, Rachel, Tate, and Olivia. His grandsons include David, Anthony Wright III, Braxton, Brooks, Jackson, Spenser, Blake, Trevor, and Drew. He is also survived by extended family, friends, and countless individuals who came to know him as a mentor and inspiration.

Andrew’s career was defined by impact and service. As Governor, he championed education reform, public safety, and opportunity for all Texans. As Secretary of State, he worked to uphold integrity and access within the democratic process. In Congress, he was known for his ability to bring people together, always placing people above politics. He was also the founder of the Turn Texas Blue movement and the Klein Education Foundation, reflecting his deep belief in education, opportunity, and the power of community.

A man of deep conviction, humility, and compassion, Andrew believed leadership was about service, not power. He was known for his firm handshake, steady presence, and ability to make everyone feel valued. He rose before sunrise, kept handwritten journals for decades, and never missed the opportunity to write a thank-you note. Despite the demands of public life, he always made time for his family, often leaving important meetings to attend a school event or family dinner, reminding those around him what truly mattered.

Andrew lived by simple but powerful words: “Service above self,” “Leave every place better than you found it,” and “The measure of a life is not in power, but in people.” His faith guided his life and leadership. A devoted Catholic, he carried his beliefs through action, compassion, and service, and he often reflected on the honor of meeting Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV as deeply meaningful moments in his life.

Beyond public office, Andrew was deeply committed to his community. Through Turn Texas Blue and the Klein Education Foundation, he mentored students, supported families, and inspired young leaders to serve with integrity and purpose. His legacy is not only found in policy or office, but in the countless lives he touched along the way.

Andrew Wright’s life was one of extraordinary service, but even more extraordinary love. He taught others to lead with dignity, serve with humility, and love without condition. Though he is no longer with us, his voice, his lessons, and his legacy will continue to guide generations. As he often said, “If you’ve helped just one person, you’ve done something worth remembering.” By that measure, Andrew Wright’s life will never be forgotten.
