Obituary

Private Alton Asbury Garrett ll at the age of 77 years old, peacefully passed away at a hospital in Los Angeles, California on August 25,2023. Private Alton Asbury Garrett ll was a decorated Veteran who served his country for two tours in the Vietnam war.

Private Garrett was born in Nacogdoches, Texas in 1945 to the parents of Asbury and Catherine Garrett who both proceeded him in death. Alton received his education in the schools he attended in Lufkin, Texas. At a very young age Alton had a desire to make a difference by serving his country. At the age of 19 years old Alton decided to join the Marines and was stationed at Fort Irwin Army Base in Barstow, CA. Alton would go on to serve two tours in the Vietnam War. For his ultimate bravery, sacrifice and heroism while in the line of duty he received the distinct honor of two Purple Heart medals.

After serving in the US Marines, “Big Al” as he was fondly known by his family and friends settled in Los Angeles, California. Everyone who knew Big Al knew how much his family meant to him. He will always be remembered as the protector of his family, the one you would call on to as he would say “ kill a dead stump” for someone he loved. If you were related in any way to Big Al he told you that you were his favorite. We will forever remember him saying,” You know you are my favorite.” And he made each individual feel like you were his favorite son, niece, nephew, cousin or brother.

Big Al will forever be missed and his memory will forever live in the hearts of those who loved him. Sister’s Frances and Joyce Jean and brother Larry preceded him in death. Big Al is survived by his brother John Morris, wife Anita Garrett. Two sons Alton Garrett lll, and Deonte Garrett. Grandchildren Darren Scipio, Alexis Garrett , Kaelyn Garrett,
