In Loving Memory of Doris Jean Holloway
Doris Jean Holloway, known affectionately as “Jean,” entered this world on November 13, 1947, in San Francisco, California, to proud parents Marie Anderson and Roy Lawson. She spent her formative years in Oakland, California, attending McClymond High School and later pursuing her passion for nursing at Merritt College.
In 1963, Jean married Jesse Holloway, and although their paths later diverged, she carried cherished memories from their time together. From a young age, Jean’s faith in Christ was steadfast, and she became a devoted member of True Light Missionary Baptist Church in West Oakland, serving faithfully on the usher board.
Jean’s professional journey led her to various roles, each marked by her infectious charm and dedication to service. She thrived as a waitress, eventually earning a promotion to bartender at the renowned Ivy’s in Jack London Square. Her warmth and sociability endeared her to patrons, including notable celebrities who frequented the establishment.
Relocating to Modesto, California, Jean found fulfillment working at Gallo Winery, where she dedicated many years to the bottling and labeling departments. She also found solace and community at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, actively participating in church events, especially the annual usher day celebrations.
In 2003, Jean embarked on a new chapter in Tacoma, Washington, recommitting herself to her faith at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. There, she served as president of the usher board, mentoring and training new members. Alongside her church duties, Jean worked tirelessly as a caregiver, touching countless lives with her compassionate care at KWA and Weatherly Inn.
Jean’s legacy of compassion extends beyond her professional endeavors. Known for her caring soul and willingness to help others, she leaves behind a profound impact on all who knew her. She cherished her family dearly, leaving behind her brothers Kenneth Tunch, Anthony Mays, Steven Lewis, late Elijah Pete Mays, and sister Shannon Bevett, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who held a special place in her heart.
Jean found joy in simple pleasures, from spending time with loved ones to indulging in her favorite pastimes of traveling, watching sitcoms, and shopping. Her love for life and unwavering faith in God sustained her through every triumph and trial.
